The Tradition of Christmas Cards

The tradition of Christmas cards started in the England in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. He came up with the idea of Christmas cards with his artist friend, John Horsley. They designed the first Christmas card and sold them for a shilling each. The image of the family drinking wine was controversial but the idea of the card was a success.

Early English cards showed flowers, fairies and other fanciful designs. In 1873, a firm, Prang and Mayer, began creating greeting cards. Christmas cards

appeared in the United States in the late 1840s but were very expensive. In 1874, Prang and Mayer started selling cards in America as well and mass produced them, making them more affordable. In the early 1900’s, homemade cards became popular. These days, you can see a large variety of cards with winter themes, religious themes, jokes and even photos on them.
